* This project is partly supported by the Australian Research Council and Monash University Grant No. 10260.00 ABSTRACT Simulation is a scientific method which is largely dominated by computers and has allowed the testing and assessment of many models before actual implementation. This paper proposes an approach to construction of a simulation that models the behaviour of an adaptive queuing protocol (AQP). AQP was developed for database applications on mobile computers in distributed multidatabase environment but also can be used in many other areas including distributed operating systems. By constructing the simulation model it is possible to both prove that it can be implemented, and at the same time study its expected behaviour in mobile computing environment. The results of the simulation are analysed and discussed.

An Enhanced MSS-based checkpointing Scheme for Mobile Computing Environment

Mobile computing systems are made up of different components among which Mobile Support Stations (MSSs) play a key role. This paper proposes an efficient MSS-based non-blocking coordinated checkpointing scheme for mobile computing environment. In the scheme suggested nearly all aspects of checkpointing and their related overheads are forwarded to the MSSs and as a result the workload of Mobile ...

On Termination Detection Protocols in a Mobile Distributed Computing Environment

Incorporating mobile components into a distributed system has posed new challenges to the design of distributed computation. This paper studies a fundamental problem in distributed computing, the termination detection problem, in a mobile environment. Two types of termination detection protocols already exist: the diiusion-based schemes 3, 10] and the weight-throwing schemes 6, 13, 18], that ar...

Quorum-Based Asynchronous Power-Saving Protocols for IEEE 802.11 Ad Hoc Networks

This paper investigates the power mode management problem for an IEEE 802.11-based mobile ad hoc network (MANET) that allows mobile hosts to tune to the power-saving (PS) mode. There are two major issues that need to be addressed in this problem: (a) wakeup prediction and (b) neighbor discovery. The former is to deliver buffered packets to a PS host at the right time when its radio is turned on...

Improving the Resilience of Military Hospitals Through Self-Adaptation of Hospital Systems Using Organic Computing

Background and Aim: Among the failures of a disaster, the disruption of the critical infrastructure of the community causes the most damage to society. Therefore, the ability of critical infrastructure such as hospitals to anticipate, absorb, adapt or rapidly recover from a devastating event is essential. The purpose of this study is to design a self-adaptive model for resilient hospital system...

DisTriB: Distributed Trust Management Model Based on Gossip Learning and Bayesian Networks in Collaborative Computing Systems

The interactions among peers in Peer-to-Peer systems as a distributed collaborative system are based on asynchronous and unreliable communications. Trust is an essential and facilitating component in these interactions specially in such uncertain environments. Various attacks are possible due to large-scale nature and openness of these systems that affects the trust. Peers has not enough inform...
